May 29, 2008
When I first came to Atlanta, I was morning drive host at a small black talk station here. One of the first shows I did on the air there was one that kept the phones ringing for more than four hours.
I wanted to find a barber shop. Not a stylist, not a salon, not a unisex or chain establishment, but an honest to goodness, old fashioned barber shop. I wanted to find one with a real barber pole out front that lit up and rotated. I wanted to see a small television set mounted high on the wall in the corner. I wanted to smell blue Barbicide, and hear the sound of a razor being sharpened against a leather strap. I wanted to sit in a chair that the barber jacked up and down with that massive metal handle on the side.
I wanted to find a real barber shop.
Growing up in Gary, Indiana, my dad took me and my brother to the same barber shop he went to as a youngster, Starks' Barber Shop on 25th Avenue just off Broadway, not far from where he grew up. It was a place with a very high ceiling, and unadorned florescent lights up there. There was a black and white TV set on top of the Coke machine in the back, by Mr. Starks' chair.
The layout was very similar to many other barber shops I've been in, in many cities. Mr. Starks had the back chair. There was an older barber -- I can't remember his name -- who worked from the next chair. You didn't want to sit in his chair. His hands were pretty shaky, if I remember right. Dad never took us to him. Anyway, after that, the next chair was held down by Mr. Starks' son, Joe. Joe went to high school with my dad at "Dear Ol' Roosevelt High" just up the street. Finally, the newest barber was relegated to the chair next to the window.
Dad took us to either Joe or Mr. Starks, depending on who was there and how many folks were there on any given visit. Once in awhile, we'd run into my grandfather there -- of course, my granddad always went to Mr. Starks.
The place had an odd, yet comforting smell of Barbicide and barbeque -- there was a rib joint down the block.
There was a vinyl couch and several vinyl chairs there, and an old coffee table that always held old magazines, the last few newspapers, and invariably copies of The Watchtower or Awake dropped off by the local Jehovah Witness, and usually a copy of Muhammad Speaks, dropped off by someone from the Nation of Islam. The Chicago Sun-Times was there most often. Usually it was flipped back to the sports pages, which I would look at while the "old heads" there would solve all the ills of the world and tell each other how to get rich, satisfied and happy at the same time.
That's what I wanted to find here in Atlanta. That started a conversation that was among the best shows of radio I've ever done.
I finally found that barber shop, and believe it or not, it was my wife who found it first, after that show. The layout is similar to what I remember, down to the high ceilings and the TV up on the wall in the corner. When I go in, I go to the guy in the back chair. He and his grandfather own the shop. His grandfather cuts heads two chairs over.
And when I go in, all the guys there solve all the world's problems and disputes -- me, right there along with them.

Santa Monica's Border Grill has come up with a good virgin mojito that is crisp and refreshing without the alcoholic kick that many associate with the Florida staple.
Minty Lime Cooler
Makes 2 servings
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lime juice
1/3 cup sugar
1/2 cup packed mint leaves
1 (12-ounce) bottle cold sparkling water
Lime slices, for garnish
Mint sprigs, for garnish
Combine the lime juice, sugar, and mint in a blender. Puree until smooth. Fill two tall glasses halfway with ice cubes. Pour half of the lime juice concentrate in each. Top with sparkling water, garnish with lime and mint, and serve.
The recipe was featured in this week's edition of Good Food, aired on KCRW Santa Monica and podcast on KCRW.com.

Some might argue that the timing (at least for Hillary, given her probable win in Kentucky today) is not good, as she'll get overshadowed again; others might even say that the "oops" headline was (or wasn't) accurate...

Republican candidate John McCain is proposing that British-style political grillings (ala Prime Minister's Question Time, which is aired live on Wednesday mornings on C-SPAN2 here in the states, and as seen in the picture here) become the norm on Capitol Hill.
McCain is proposing that Congress "grant me the privilege of coming before both houses to take questions, and address criticism, much the same as the prime minister of Great Britain appears regularly before the House of Commons."
I don't know that McCain can stand the grilling that would likely take place -- especially on issues like border security, the economy and the war. But I do like the idea. It suggests a higher measure of accountability, which is always good.
Not that the other two candidates would follow suit.

Visit your local Starbucks (the earlier in the day the better) each Tuesday for a free card to download a hand-picked song/video redeemable on iTunes. And no, you don't have to have an iPod to grab it; just iTunes (for those who only listen on their computers).
"Hand-picked" in this instance, means picked by the "Starbucks Entertainment team." No word on if the picks will be decent ones, or yawners. Then again, that's pretty much subjective. Those cards will be good for 60 days.
Starbucks and iTunes did this last fall, and were wildly successful, as they generated millions of downloads over the stretch of the promotion.

Now, Halle Berry is headed in the opposite direction: she's set to play a white racist in Frankie & Alice.
Well, sort of -- in the film, she's a black woman struggling with multiple personality disorder, and one of the personalities is a white racist. Berry said she's going to shave her head for the role "in real time."
Berry is also producing the film, for Access Motion Pictures in association with Reality Pictures in Motion. No production or release date has been set yet.

I'm enjoying work and life too much. Things have changed a bit for me in the past year and change -- though I'm still working in television (and loving it), I've spent the past year dealing with a massive stroke my brother suffered. He's in far better straits now than he was when it happened. He's on the way to a divorce from his wife, and is living with my parents in northern Indiana.
The entire situation has made me reexamine my life medically, as well as to take a hard look at my personal priorities.
In any event, all is well. I'll toss a few "fun" things here from time to time, just to keep the dust off of the page.
First and foremost, is to let everyone know to keep an eye out for the Indiana Jones 4 movie trailer -- it'll be out on Thursday morning in the 8 a.m. hour of "Good Morning America," then online at IndianaJones.com and elsewhere.

My life is taking a turn now that is forcing me to give up writing Ramblings' Journal.
I've accepted a new position that will preclude me from continuing my writings here. So I'm pulling the plug on R/J in order to focus on the new opportunity that has been placed before me.
Contrary to the opinions of others, I'm not running for office (I don't have the patience), nor am I joining a monastary. But I am turning the page on this chapter of my life, and moving forward. I'm very thankful for the friendships I've developed as a result of the blog, and I'm still going to be around -- you never know when an e-mail from me or a note in your comments section will show up to jab you or give you a thumbs up.
I want to say a special thank you to my Conservative Brotherhood bretheren, and encourage you to take a look at their blogs -- they are each fantastic writers in their own right. Their views are varied and they are each outspoken in their own ways. Their work is beginning to show up elsewhere, which makes me both happy and proud to know them.
The other blogs I've participated in -- Blogcritics and The Dead Pool -- are both worth your time and your thoughts. (Laurence, I'm still in the pool, even though I don't have a bunch of points. And Eric, I'm sorry that I hadn't had the opportunity to do more critiques in the past.)
A huge thank you to the Mu.nu community -- they've been incredibly supportive and fantastic. Pixy, you're the best.
I know I'm forgetting folks, and I apologize to you in advance.
I've asked Pixy to pull the plug next weekend.
Life's changes happen all the time, and for reasons known and unknown. All I can do is to step out on the path that God has lain for me, and know that He is at my side during my journey. I'm also happy to have my wife and my kids with me - they help keep me grounded. After twenty years (it'll be twenty years in a week and a half) of wedded bliss, I'm certainly happy.
Thanks again to everyone. God bless you all, and I'm sure we'll see each other 'round the 'net.
'Bye.

On Sunday, Landrieu said it was President Bush's fault that New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin didn't use city school buses to evacuate those trapped by flooding.Think about this -- Landrieu holds so much antagonism against Bush that she blames him for the shortcomings of the Mayor of New Orleans!(FEMA Director Michael) Brown's departure, Landrieu said, "will not alone solve all the problems that plagued the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina and the devastating floods that followed the levee breaches."
In a statement posted to her Web site, the Louisiana democrat insisted that the Bush White House still needed to be held responsible.
"The people of our nation, and in particular, the Gulf Coast, deserve and demand full accountability for this administration's missteps in protecting and helping Americans in need," Landrieu complained.
I've heard of holding a grudge, but this is ridiculous.

After the monster hurricane struck the Gulf Coast, federal agencies, including FEMA and the Department of Homeland Security waited, ostensibly for requests from the state governors in those states. But while they waited, people in all three states suffered.
"Katrina exposed serious problems in our response capability at all levels of government," Bush said at joint White House news conference with the president of Iraq.I've been very critical of the failings of the locals on the ground in the region, including New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco - and deservedly so. They dropped the ball as it applied to their local residents. They had the obligation to do things sooner than they did; they had the obligation to make moves prior to the storm's arrival -- and both failed in their test of serving and protecting their constituents."To the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take responsibility," Bush said.
However, the federal bureacracy failed as well. When it became obvious that the locals were not getting the job done, the feds had the obligation to step in and help the people in those locales. President Bush has finally stepped to the plate -- albeit late -- and taken the burdon on his shoulders, as well he should. However, he should have done so sooner.
Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin should both likewise step to the fore and admit their failings in this sordid disaster. I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for them, however.

Sgt. Matthews died of pneumonia at Washington's Fox Chase Nursing Home.
Sgt. Matthews, who also was the oldest Buffalo Soldier, was heir to a proud military heritage that originated with the black soldiers who fought in the Indian wars on the Western frontier. Historians say that the Cheyenne, Kiowa and Apache tribes bestowed the appellation because the soldiers' black, curly hair reminded them of a buffalo's mane.Thank you for your service, Sgt. Matthews; it is much appreciated and admired.Sgt. Matthews joined up at the end of the Buffalo Soldiers' colorful Western exploits. The regiments that made up the Buffalo Soldiers -- the 9th and 10th cavalries and 24th and 25th infantries -- stayed together for years afterward, however, fighting in World War I and II and Korea. The all-black regiments were disbanded in 1952 after the Army desegregated.
Sgt. Matthews was born Aug. 7, 1894, in Greenville, Ala., and grew up in Mansfield, Ohio. He rode horses starting when he was a child, delivering newspapers on his pony.
God bless you and Godspeed as you go with God.
